Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskeyBibliographyMcCloskey, Robert. 1999. MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS. New York: Puffin Books. ISBN 0140564349Plot SummaryIn this book, Mr. and Mrs. Mallard look for a safe place to raise their ducklings and first choose the Public Garden in Boston where there is a nice pond and people feed them peanuts. However, after discovering it was would be too dangerous for the ducklings, they end up on an island near the Charles River. There, they meet a policeman who feeds them peanuts every day. After the ducklings hatch, Mrs. Mallard teaches them the skills they will need to survive and stay safe. Then, Michael and his fellow police officers direct traffic through downtown Boston when Mrs. Mallard takes the ducklings back to the Public Garden to meet back up with their father. Critical AnalysisMcCloskey’s writing style is simple, realistic, and indicative of the times in that a “typical” family unit consisted of a mother, a father, and children. The mother taught basic survival skills to her young, to walk in a line, and to come when they were called. Michael, the policeman, was a civil serviceman and credible symbol of trust. McCloskey’s shaded pencil illustrations certainly complement the story with realistic, complex scenery. The attention to detail was evident in the busy streets; automobiles of the time, parks, and storefronts, as well as the way characters are dressed. The expressions of the ducks and the people are very distinct and interesting. I love that he included a book lending and library storefront in the story with patrons of all ages! I believe that the realistic and entertaining expressions depicted in his characters, human and duck alike, are what has helped this classic picture book withstand the test of time. I think this is a great read aloud picture book. I can imagine that the children would love the rhyming names of the ducklings and perhaps relate to the smaller one who is always at the back of the line seemingly saying, “Wait for me!” Review ExcerptsBook Links (A.L.A.) 01/01/99BooklistCaldecott Medal/Honor 01/01/42Christian Library Journal starred 11/20/04Horn BookSchool Library Journal starredWilson’s Children 10/01/10Connections*Students could compare and contrast their hometown with the Mallard family’s hometown of Boston.*Students could go on a guided “virtual” tour of the Boston Public Gardens where swan boats still operate.*Teacher could incorporate a spelling lesson on rhyming words.*Teacher could use this book as a read aloud to introduce a science unit on ducks.*Students could come up with a safe place for the Mallard family to live in their hometown and state the reasons why.Image credit: Amazon
