Abre los ojos a.k.a. Open Your Eyes (1997)

Perhaps the strength of this movie is primarily its story. I couldn’t find other aspects of filmmaking involved that impressed me as much as the story did. The actors play their characters just as good as they are supposed to, not for once do you feel like you had to praise the actor’s performance because it is outstanding. Although there are moments where the lead actor ()shined more the story, but on the whole the movie leaves room for the story to captivate you more than anything else. There could have been other things that might have made this movie special, but it would be for different reasons. The visuals come close to being as memorable as the story or did the story make it that way? Very few movies have the kind of effect Open Your Eyes does. I could go on and on about the brilliance I just witnessed, let me restrict myself. The movie lays down questions, questions that will hit you so hard that you might get emotional just because you can relate to it as much as the character does. The emotional depth of this movie also depends primarily on the story, not so much on the performances. This is amazing as usually most of the emotional moments in a film are sad because the actors play it so well or because previous sub-plots built up the emotional depth. Would your subconscious choose happiness for eternity if it can? Would you be happier if given a chance to choose your destiny? Do you really have any idea how lucky you are to have the things you do right now? There are few more questions that the movie leaves you with; these are the ones I can immediately recall. The story is told through the eyes of Cesar, the lead character. It is obvious things go berserk for him as the story progresses. Most of the scenes in the movie are recalled by Cesar in a mental hospital. This is a good idea as most moments in the story are told only when Cesar recalls them and so you pretty much feel the mental turmoil Cesar is going through. To achieve the philosophical and emotional depth of such heights, writers usually come up with stories that will leave you in limbo until you have seen the movie again. The story of this movie is not subtle in a way that makes it seem like an arthouse film. The story is obvious and easy to follow, the questions it asks are simple. The non-linear method of storytelling is not going to confuse you. There are no paradoxes, there are no puzzles, in short there is nothing about the story that you “won’t get”. Are you unhappy because you can’t help it or you choose to be that way? Do you have what it takes to simply choose happiness over what you are going through right now, if given the power to do so? There is music, the kind that will force those tears out of eyes just when you think you can control yourself. There are visuals, the kind sure to remain memorable for a long time. And the performances, which complete the movie. (The actress who played Nuria () is more captivating than any other actor in this movie.) The screenplay is so brilliant that it overshadows everything else. You can’t possibly admire anything else while watching this movie for the first time. The one last question, why isn’t this among my 10 or 20 most favourite movies? It could’ve been more theatrical. There could have been more melodrama. There could have been more room for the great performances to be admired. There could have been more room for audience to gaze at the visuals. But I am not sure if all these things would make the movie a masterpiece. Open Your Eyes is what it is because it does not have all those things. All movies are as good as they are because of what they have instead of what they don’t.

This was for the CAS104 challenge on SCS. This is actually my first CAS -  I tend to want to overdue everything and not leave much white space. I love the border.
